Hiking in the north mountains of Leros

A circular route through the imposing mountains of the north, areas of unspoiled, natural beauty, and fantastic vistas of the islands. This walk will delight all nature lovers.

What you need: Sturdy shoes, water, provisions.
Time: 4.5 hours
Category: Medium

Start this walk at the “Kamara” car dealership on the main road from Alinda to Partheni.

Follow the dirt road uphill past the chapel. When you reach the fork in the road, take the path on the right. The trail leads uphill to a junction. Turn right here and follow the sign for Arkells.

The path snakes its way along the left flank of the imposing hillsides, twisting and turning en route.

On the right, you will see an impressive panorama of Leros Airport and the Bay of Partheni coming into view. When you reach the goat pens on your right, follow the right fork in the road. Continue along this road until you reach the next division in the road. Do not take the main road. Instead, you will see a small, flat area to your right. Cross this towards the airport, and you will find a narrow, winding path that leads down through the valley.

When you reach a small growth of Oleander, follow the path on down through the valley until you reach a paved road near a motocross area. keep right until you see a sign on your left for “The Temple of Artemis.” Follow the short path up to the fenced area and the temple itself.

After your visit here, follow the road back to the main road from Partheni to Alinda.

Once back in Alinda, relax in one of the many beachside tavernas or cafes, enjoy the beach, or continue your walk back to Agia Marina along the waterfront of the island´s small and relaxed resort area, with its indented coves and pastel-coloured villas.
