Cinema Roma in Porto Lago – A Timeless Architectural Jewel in Leros

Nestled beside Liberty Square (Piazza Littoria) and the charming coastal walkway, La Passegiata sul Mare, Cinema Roma stands out as an architectural gem in Porto Lago. This exceptional project was conceived in 1933 by the forward-thinking Italian governor of the Dodecanese, Mario Lago, in the midst of challenging times for the small island.

In 1935, the 34-year-old architect Armanto Bernabiti brought the plans to life, and the construction was entrusted to the company De Martise N. Sardelli, with Cesare Loi overseeing the works. The ambitious project reached completion in 1938 and saw its inauguration on April 21 of the same year by the fascist governor Cesare Maria De Vecchi.

A unique aspect of this building is its central entrance, flanked by two semicircular staircases leading to the balcony. The main hall, with its sloping floor, wooden stage, dressing rooms, and auxiliary spaces, serves the practical needs of the structure.

Tragically, the fortunes of war took a toll on this Italian masterpiece. In 1941, British planes damaged the cinema, and in September 1943, German planes subjected it to a second barbaric air attack on Leros. The edifice was left mortally wounded, abruptly halting theatrical and film performances in a cruel twist of fate. The theater’s stage transitioned from cultural events to the harsh reality of wartime.

As the Italians and English were driven out by the conquerors, the bombed cinema languished in disrepair. It operated poorly as a summer cinema for years, a mere shadow of its former glory.

It took 63 years for the Municipal Council, led by Mayor Mr. Timotheus Kottakis, to take the necessary steps for its reconstruction, handing it back to the people of Leros. Notably, the project received 75% of the funding from the European Union and 25% from the Greek State, totaling a repair budget of 2,327,800 Euros.

In 2009, the refurbished Cinema Roma resumed its role in the community, offering valuable services as both a cinema and a venue for various events. Today, much like in the distant past, it stands as a symbol of resilience and continuity, enriching the lives of the people on this beautiful island.
