Safe Travels in Leros: A Guide to Traffic Rules for Everyone

Leros, our beautiful Greek island, is getting ready for a wonderful summer. Unfortunately, there have been a few traffic accidents lately involving both locals and visitors. To keep everyone safe this season, here’s a helpful reminder of Leros’s traffic rules, with a focus on the island’s unique features.

Roundabouts: Give Way to the Right

Unlike most places, traffic circles in Leros have a special rule: always give way to traffic coming from your right, even if you’re already in the roundabout. This applies to the two roundabouts in Lakki, near the taxi station and near the cinema.

Narrow Roads: Be Cautious

Leros’s roads can be tricky for new drivers. Here are some tips:

  •  and stay to the right, especially on sharp turnReduce speeds.
  • Use your horn on blind curves to warn oncoming traffic.
  • Be extra careful at night due to limited visibility.

Be extra cautious, give way to others, and reduce your speed to prevent accidents.

Sharing the Road

  • Respect Older Drivers: Be patient with elderly drivers who may take more time to react.
  • Scooters: Be aware of motorbikes and scooters, a common mode of transport here. If you drive a scooter please..we repeat again… please… don’t forget your helmet!

Local Drivers: Be Extra Considerate

During summer, there will be more visitors unfamiliar with the roads. Be extra cautious, give way to others, and reduce your speed to prevent accidents.

Pedestrians on the Road

Unlike many places, Leros has no crosswalks. Pedestrians may sometimes walk along the road. Keep an eye out, drive slowly, and maintain a safe distance when approaching pedestrians.

Be Patient with Summer Maintenance

Summer brings extra activity on Leros. Expect to see municipal garbage trucks and maintenance crews working hard. Be patient if they block narrow roads. Follow their signs and wait safely until they finish.

General Traffic Regulations

  • Speed Limits: 30 km/h in towns and 50 km/h on main roads.
  • Seatbelts: Mandatory for drivers and front-seat passengers.
  • Helmets: Mandatory for drivers. We always wear our helmets even for a very short distance.
  • Mobile Phones: Hands-free use only while driving.
  • Alcohol Limit: Driving under the influence is illegal. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%.
  • Focus on the Road: Enjoy the scenery by stopping safely, not while driving.
