One question that I frequently receive from tourists is what it’s like to live on the island of Leros during winter. They often inquire about how we spend our days and if anything is open during this time. In my opinion, living on Leros during winter is something to be cherished because we get to enjoy the island in a different way.
Compared to a big city, Leros may not have many options, but as someone who has lived in Athens and Rhodes, I can say that I have never missed anything specific while living on the island. For us locals, our daily routine is relatively easy. The weather during winter is mild, and crime is a word that we mainly hear in the news. Luckily, we are close to forgetting what it even means to experience crime, and locals coexist without any significant conflicts. All public services are available and well-staffed.
The sea can have high waves during this time, which is something to keep in mind, especially if you have a family. However, Leros has two major advantages: we have a hospital with experienced staff and proper diagnostic equipment, and even if necessary, we can reach Athens within a day, either directly or indirectly.
During winter, we can enjoy walks along the beaches and hills, visit historical monuments, ride bicycles, play tennis, football, and basketball, and engage in other activities. There are also plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars open throughout the winter. So, there is always something to do, and we can appreciate the island’s beauty in a quieter, more peaceful setting.
Leros offers its residents and visitors a unique and peaceful experience and plenty of activities to enjoy. I would definitely say that Leros is an excellent place to spend the whole year around.
