Anna Asvesta: The Heart of Leros’ Hospitality

Anna Asvesta is, in many ways, a reflection of Leros itself; gracious, grounded, and quietly compelling. As the manager of Crithoni’s Paradise Hotel, she brings together an intimate love for her island and a thoughtful approach to hospitality, shaping an experience that feels both personal and effortless. We spoke with Anna about the responsibilities of stewardship, the evolution of local tourism, and how she translates her intimate love for Leros into a destination that people don’t just visit, but return to.

What do you love most about life here, and what aspects do you find most demanding or challenging?
What I love most about life in Leros is its rhythm. There’s a balance between calm and the daily flow of people – a sense of authenticity that’s hard to find elsewhere. The sea is always present. Whether you look at it or simply listen to it, it reminds you to take a deeper breath. The most demanding part is that life on a small island requires creativity. The seasonality of tourism, limited infrastructure, and the need to provide a high level of hospitality under any circumstances keep you constantly on your toes. But that’s also part of the charm.

Are there people or specific experiences that have shaped your connection to Leros over the years?
Yes, many. First of all, my family’s love for Leros, as well as the people of Leros. Although I grew up in Athens, my paths crossed with Leros after I became an adult. We always came to the island for holidays, so its everyday life wasn’t unfamiliar to me. Seeing how locals welcome visitors as friends rather than customers shaped the way I understand hospitality. There were also formative moments: summers when the island was full of life, winters of calm with conversations at friendly gatherings, and the sense of community that emerges in times of difficulty. These experiences created a deep feeling of “belonging”.

What inspired you to work in the hospitality industry, and particularly in Leros?
Hospitality has always been part of our culture. It didn’t start as a business choice but as a natural extension of our relationship with the place and its people. Leros had – and still has – a unique character: an authentic, unpretentious island with a rich history, distinctive architecture, and nature that brings peace. As a family, we saw the need for accommodation that respects the island, combines comfort with simplicity, and allows visitors to experience it as it truly is.

What was the initial idea or vision behind Crithoni’s Paradise Hotel?
The idea came first! My father and uncle, having been away from the island for many years, wanted to give something back to the place they loved and grew up in. They wanted to leave their mark on an island that had fascinated them since childhood, even if their formative years were not easy.

I believe the idea came from the thought of returning to their beloved home – not just for them, but for the families they had built after years away from the island.
The vision was clear: to create a space where you feel you “belong” from the first moment. A hotel that connects the natural beauty of Crithoni with human warmth.
The original concept was based on three pillars:

  • Respect for the environment and local aesthetics.
Architecture and layout were designed to harmonize with the natural terrain and the style of the area.
  • Hospitality with genuine human connection.
Guests should never feel anonymous but experience true “hosting,” not just service.

Creating a small paradise for relaxation. A place where visitors can disconnect from everyday life, find peace, and enjoy quality without excess.

How would you describe Leros’ tourism identity today? What makes it stand out among other Aegean islands?
Leros has a distinct tourism identity based on authenticity, history, and its gentle development. The island stands out for its unique architectural heritage, rich cultural legacy, and natural bays, offering a high-quality, genuine experience far from mass tourism.

Have you noticed changes in visitor profiles in recent years? Who are the main types of tourists that come to Leros?
In recent years, there’s been a clear broadening and diversification of visitor profiles. Beyond traditional families and domestic travelers, there is growing interest from international visitors, particularly from Northern Europe. The island now attracts people seeking themed experiences such as historical and cultural tourism, water activities, peaceful vacations, and authentic culinary experiences.

Do you think current infrastructure and accommodation are sufficient to support increased tourism?
Current infrastructure and accommodations adequately meet today’s needs. However, to handle a significant increase in tourism, targeted investments would be needed in upgrading services and facilities, as well as improving transportation links and overall accessibility.

What do you consider the most important needs or priorities for improving tourism in Leros?
In my opinion, the key priorities are:

  • Systematic promotion and utilization of the island’s historical heritage and monuments.
  • Strengthening connectivity with the mainland and nearby islands.
  • Promoting sustainable practices and environmental infrastructure.
  • Continuous training and professional development of hospitality staff.
  • Supporting and showcasing local gastronomy and producers.
  • Maintenance and improvement of municipal infrastructure.

What is it like to run a dynamic tourism business as a woman? Have you faced challenges or stereotypes?
Managing a tourism business is demanding but extremely creative. As a woman, I have faced some challenges related to traditional perceptions and stereotypes. Nevertheless, with consistency, professionalism, and determination, these obstacles can be overcome. My experience shows that competence and effectiveness are recognized regardless of gender.

What skills do you consider essential for a woman pursuing a professional career in tourism and hospitality?
Essential skills include:

  • High-level communication skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Leadership with a focus on collaboration.
  • Organizational skills and effective time management.
  • Multilingual abilities and cross-cultural understanding.
  • Adaptability and decision-making under challenging conditions.

How do you manage to balance your professional role with personal life?
Balancing professional and personal responsibilities requires systematic planning, setting priorities, and personal discipline. A supportive work team and a stable family environment are crucial. I also believe that self-care and sufficient rest are necessary to maintain high performance.

If you had to describe Leros in three words, what would they be?
Authentic – Peaceful – Historical
