“Amerika”

In this solo musical performance, Dimitris Mystakidis reinterprets, in his own personal way, rebetiko songs that were recorded and performed live only in America by Greek immigrant musicians almost a century ago.

The pain of separation, the long and arduous journey to America, the struggle for survival and adaptation, marginalization, illegality, nostalgia, and the dream of returning home all pass like cinematic images through the songs of the performance. Their music, austere yet masterfully woven, spells out sorrows, recalls memories, and evokes deep emotion.

The audiovisual material accompanying the performance serves as a reminder of a history that repeats itself. It highlights the experiences and feelings born in every migration, among all peoples.
