The Unique Animal Shelter in Leros: A Heartfelt Mission to Rescue Abandoned Animals

In the beautiful surroundings of Leros, Greece, a heartfelt dream took shape, driven by a strong commitment to save abandoned animals and give them a new chance at life. The Association of our island, lovingly called “Stray Patousakia,” didn’t just emerge as a duty but as a shining example of love and care for the island’s voiceless creatures.

The story begins in 2018 when three caring women – Flora Koutouzou, Stella Nova, and Sandra Schider – came together, forming a deep bond over their shared concern for the well-being of stray and mistreated animals on the island. What started as a friendship quickly blossomed into a special and dedicated connection, all rooted in their collective love for these innocent beings.

While each woman had begun her own project in 2015, the true magic happened when they joined forces. In December 2019, they officially set out on a mission to make their dream a reality, extending their care to feed, nurture, and provide comfort to the animals who had suffered due to human neglect.

As more volunteers joined their cause, including Alexandra Drantakis, John Stanley, and Raluca Balan, discussions about establishing a shelter gained momentum. In 2020, the shelter began to take shape with the commencement of its construction. It transformed into a secure haven for abandoned and abused dogs, providing not only safety but also the healing power of love.

By 2021, the shelter had become a source of employment and hope for the community. In 2022, they had rescued over 120 dogs, giving them love and essential medical care. Many found new families, and the local Municipality recognized the profound impact of the association’s efforts, solidifying their support.

In 2023, the Leros Philanthropic Association was born, gaining global recognition. Zaharoula Lagopati played a crucial role in enhancing adoption efforts, adding an important dimension to the shelter’s development. Flora, Stella, and Sandra were no longer just volunteers; they became key figures in the island’s revival, leaving an enduring mark of love in the Leros community.
