Experiencing an earthquake can be unsettling, especially if you’ve never been through one before. The most important thing to remember is to stay calm. Panic can lead to poor decisions, while staying composed helps you react in the safest way possible.
What to Do During an Earthquake
- Stay Indoors if You Are Inside: Find cover under a sturdy table, desk, or next to an interior wall away from windows. Hold on until the shaking stops.
- If Outside, Stay in an Open Space: Move away from buildings, trees, and power lines that could collapse.
- If You Are Near the Coast: Earthquakes can sometimes trigger tsunamis. If you feel strong shaking that lasts more than 20 seconds, move to higher ground as a precaution.
