Every year, the island of Leros proudly celebrates the national anniversary of OXI (meaning no) on October 28th. It is a day dedicated to the memory of those who fought for the freedom of our country and symbolizes the courage, strength, and unity of the Greek people.
The Festivities on the Island
The celebrations begin on the eve of the anniversary, when students from the island’s schools lay wreaths at local monuments. ALso, each school organizes special celebrations with poems, songs, and short plays dedicated, with respect and emotion, to heroes who fought and sacrificed for freedom in 1940.
The Religious Ceremony and Tributes
On the day of the anniversary, an official service is held at the Church of Saint Nicholas in Lakki, attended by local authorities, the municipal band, and the armed guard of Leros. This is followed by a memorial prayer and the laying of wreaths at the Monument of the Sacred Squadron Fighters, where schools, organizations, and citizens pay tribute to the fallen.
The Parade of Pride
Afterwards, the grand parade takes place, featuring all the Cultural Associations, the schools of Leros, the sea scouts, and military units. The top-achieving students proudly carry their school’s flag, while the crowd watches with emotion, applauding the island’s children and feeling proud of the new generation.
A Day of Remembrance and Togetherness
After the parade, and since October 28th is a public holiday, locals and visitors take the opportunity to meet with family and friends. The cafés and restaurants of Leros fill with people enjoying coffee or a meal, in an atmosphere of celebration and warmth. It is a day that brings everyone together, filling the island with smiles and national pride.
October 28th on Leros is not only a historical commemoration but also a day of collective memory and unity. The island remembers the “No” of 1940 and celebrates with honor, respect, and joy — as befits a day that reminds us of the enduring strength of the Greek spirit.
