Architectural Marvels in Leros

The city of Porto Lago, now known as Lakki, is home to numerous examples of minimalist Italian architecture from the 1912-43 period. On the north side of the island, the archaeological site near Parthenio airport hosts the Hellenistic temple of Iokallida Parthenos Artemis and the early Christian church of Agios Georgios. Nearby, the 18th-century church of Agia Kiuras – Matrona is recognized for its cultural importance by the Ministry of Culture.

Art and History Interwoven

During the Junta era, exiled political prisoners decorated the interior of Agia Kiuras – Matrona with religious representations, using the faces of island inhabitants, guards, and fellow prisoners as models. The abandoned WWII camps at Diapori in the south of Leros still preserve the wall paintings of German and Italian soldiers, providing insight into their living conditions and longing for their previous lives.
