The pulse of Asia Minor beats in Leros! The coasts of Asia Minor and Cappadocia are symbols of Hellenism that continue to move us, representing indelible landmarks of our culture and history. A group of citizens in Leros—with or without ancestral roots in these lost yet unforgettable homelands—felt the need to create a gathering place on the island. This “hearth” serves as a space for exchanging ideas, preserving traditions, and passing down the customs of the displaced Greeks of Asia Minor. Thus, the Association of Asia Minor Greeks was established and flourished on this frontier island.
Objectives
Preservation: The collection, study, rescue, and protection of Asia Minor’s history, monuments, and folklore, alongside the revitalization of its traditions.
Solidarity: Fostering communication, moral support, and solidarity among members and all people of Asia Minor descent.
Cultural Presence: Maintaining a strong social presence in the cultural life of the island, as well as in other parts of Greece and abroad, through socio-cultural events.
Education: Teaching and passing on the cultural and folkloric characteristics of Asia Minor Hellenism to the island’s youth through the creation of dance and artistic groups.
Advocacy: Addressing, defending, and promoting all matters concerning the Asia Minor community.
Networking: Strengthening relations with other Asia Minor associations in Greece, Cyprus, and abroad.
Promotion: Highlighting the intellectual and general cultural achievements of the people of Asia Minor.
Activities
Despite being a young organization, the Association has participated in many notable performances through its dance department, both on Leros and throughout Greece.
The Folklore and Customs Department actively organizes the revival of traditional Easter customs (such as Klimata, Lazarakia, Vagia, Lampres, the Lament of Christ, and the Holy Saturday “Earthquake” representation), as well as Christmas and New Year’s traditions. Furthermore, the Association has organized numerous certified seminars in visual arts and crafts (Polymer clay, traditional embroidery, knitting, painting, and jewelry making) in collaboration with the “Gennimata” Vocational Training Center.
