Deposito di Guerra: A Unique Journey Through Leros’ Rich History

When passion and love for the history of a place converge, extraordinary place like the Deposito di Guerra are born. This private museum, dedicated to the history of Leros from 1912 until the island’s integration with Greece, is the personal pride of its creator, Thanasis Paraponiaris, the “curator” of collective memory safeguarded behind the magical doors of this one-of-a-kind museum.

What began as a personal collection has evolved into something much bigger – a place for preserving the collective memory of Leros. The Deposito di Guerra serves as a “time capsule” that transports visitors back to the dark days of WWII. Boasting more than 3,000 exhibits, both small and large, the collection caters to everyone, from history buffs to those who wish to learn and travel back in time so that younger generations can learn and older ones will never forget.

Initiated collectors, historians, researchers, and history enthusiasts will discover a treasure trove of unique finds, while the uninitiated will embark on a journey to bygone eras with the help and valuable knowledge of Mr. Thanasis. He generously shares his treasure with all visitors, believing that the exhibits belong to everyone; he just happens to be their preserver.

The welcoming space of the Deposito di Guerra is housed in a replica of an Italian warehouse. As the ever-growing collection expanded, a larger space was needed, ultimately finding its home in the area that once served as a hub for both Italian and British forces, in the Agia Irini region.

One would be mistaken to think that this is just a weapons collection. The Deposito di Guerra features an array of artifacts, including helmets, anti-tank weapons, projectile debris, medals, coins, documents, uniforms, and everyday utensils, making the collection diverse and anything but monotonous.

Established in 1996, Mr. Thanasis shares the story of the island’s battles, keeping objects and memories alive while welcoming all visitors on this unique journey through time at the Deposito di Guerra.
