Theater Play: THE BIRTH OF A FASCIST – THE APOLOGY OF THEOFILOS TSAFOS
A horrific femicide shocks public opinion during the years of the dictatorship. Nikos Koundouros, then a political exile in London, follows the strong social impact of the widely discussed trial and, inspired by this event, writes a powerful monodrama.
A law student brutally killed the young woman he had been in a relationship with for three years. The victim’s body was thrown from the third floor of a central hotel in Athens, semi-naked after a sexual act, onto the pavement like trash. Koundouros masterfully enters the distorted mind of the murderer.
He writes in detail, capturing the anxiety and persecution delusion of Theofilos Tsafos – a murderer who confused the court and was characterized both as schizophrenic and as acting with full awareness.
In his defense, the murderer claims he is an agent of the secret services – a claim that was never confirmed.
At this point, Koundouros skillfully unravels the story, going back to the events to reveal the paranoia behind the birth of a fascist.
The play was directed by Giota Koundouraki, starring Nikos Panopoulos, and was performed 15 years ago for two successful seasons. It is now being presented again for a limited number of performances.
