Theater: Report to Greco

February 1 @ 20:00 - 21:30

“My entire soul is a cry, and all my work a commentary on that cry. I call upon memory to remember, I gather my life from the air, I stand like a soldier and make my report to Greco, because he is kneaded from the same Cretan soil as I am and, better than all the fighters who live or have lived, he can understand me.”
N. Kazantzakis

“Report to Greco” is the final work of the great Greek writer. It is a kind of spiritual autobiography or, as Kazantzakis himself describes it, a “report” in the military sense of the term, concerning his aims and his struggles. It begins with his childhood and ends on the day of the “Cretan gaze” and the conception of the Odyssey. It does not narrate his entire life, but presents the milestones of his spiritual journey, without following the strict chronological order of his actual biography.

In the performance, Takis Chrysikakos stars, portraying Nikos Kazantzakis and characters from his work, and converses with his protagonists: Captain Michalis, Alexis Zorbas, Dominikos Theotokopoulos, and Homer’s beautiful Helen.

Through the heroes of Nikos Kazantzakis’s works and his confessions (to his “grandfather,” as he calls El Greco), this performance brings us face to face with the grandeur of Greece and the indomitable spirit of the writer himself.
