Leros Windmills

Leros is known for its scenic and well-preserved windmills, once pivotal in grinding wheat and other grains. These windmills, embodying the island’s agricultural history and cultural heritage, offer a captivating peek into Leros’ past and present. These structures, dating back to the 18th century, were a key economic resource, functioning as a power source for grain grinding and water pumping.

The island houses over 20 windmills, primarily situated in the picturesque village of Panteli. Each windmill, unique in size and shape, upholds the same design principle, renowned for its cylindrical structure and cone-shaped roof. These windmills feature wooden blades and sails made of canvas, oriented to capture the prevailing winds common to the island, further enhancing their charm as a tourist attraction.
